About the Rolls-Royce M250:

The Rolls-Royce M250 is a family of turboshaft engines. The M250 Series II turboshaft engines have a two-shaft modular design featuring four to six-stage axial and single-stage centrifugal compressors, a two-stage low-pressure turbine, two-stage high-pressure turbine with a hydromechanical fuel control system, and a gearbox with a 6,000 rpm output. Compressed air is routed to the aft end of the engine for combustion while exhaust gases exit upward from the middle. The larger M250 Series IV engines are identical in layout except they have a one-stage centrifugal rather than a centrifugal/axial compressor.

The newest M250 Series IV turboshaft engines feature a FADEC (Full Authority Digital Engine Control) system.

To date, M250 engines have accumulated more than 220 million operating flight hours and more than 31,000 M250 engines have been delivered with an estimated 16,000 engines currently in service.

Originally, the M250 was developed as the T63 to meet a requirement from the U.S. Army for a 317 shp turboshaft engine. Since its introduction, the original M250 Series I has spawned an entire family of small turbine engines including turboshafts, turboprops, industrial/marine starter generators and disposable turbojet derivatives.

Continuous development has resulted in the current range of M250 Series II and M250 Series IV engines that power several of the major helicopters in the world. Series II (M250-C20) turboshaft applications include the Bell 206B/TH-67, MDH MD500/520N and Eurocopter AS.355/BO 105. The recent introduction of the M250-C20R+ performance improvement package further enhanced the type's performance and economy. The latest FADEC-equipped M250 Series IV family of M250-C30/C40/C47 engines delivers 650 to 715 shp and powers the Bell 407/430/206L and MDH MD530/600N.

The now retired Bell OH-58D Kiowa Warrior armed scout helicopter was powered by a single M250-C30R/3 (T703-AD-700A) turboshaft engine rated at 650 shp.

The M250 is also used on a number of Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) applications such as the Northrop Grumman MQ-8B Fire Scout Vertical Take-off UAV (VTUAV), which is in service with the U.S. Navy/U.S. Marine Corps. THe MQ-8B uses the M250-C20 engine (military designation is T63-A-720) with 420 shp. In addition to serving aboard U.S. Navy Littoral Combat Ships (LCS), the MQ-8 Fire Scout was selected to meet the U.S. Army Class IV Future Combat Systems UAV requirement.
